British officer served as medical officer with 198th Field Ambulance, Royal Army Medical Corps attached to 2nd Bn Cambridgeshire Regt, 53rd Infantry Bde, 18th Infantry Div in GB and Malaya, 1/1941-2/1942; prisoner of war in Pudu Prison, Kuala Lumpar, Malaya and on Burma Thailand Railway, 2/1942-8/1945

REEL 1 Background in Northern Ireland, 1913-1939: family; education; attitude to declaration of Second World War in Northern Ireland, 3/9/1939. Aspects of period as medical officer with 198th Field Ambulance, Royal Army Medical Corps in GB, 1939-1941: character of work; attachment to 2nd Bn Cambridgeshire Regt. Recollections of period as medical officer with 198th Field Ambulance, Royal Army Medical Corps attached to 2nd Bn Cambridgeshire Regt, 53rd Infantry Bde, 18th Infantry Div in Malaya, 1/1942-2/1942: voyage aboard HMT Sobieski and USS Mount Vernon from GB to Singapore, 10/1941-1/1941 including American crew of USS Mount Vernon reaction to Japanese attack at Pearl Harbor, 7/12/1941; arrival in Singapore and move of 53rd Infantry Bde up the Malayan Peninsula; story of capture by Imperial Japanese Army; initial impression of Japanese; second hand story of Japanese massacre of Allied troops; work in advanced dressing station. REEL 2 Continues: question of vocalisation of pain.
