Content description

REEL 1 Aspects of enlistment and training with Royal Navy in GB, 1939- 1940: call-up for naval service, 26/10/1939; opinion of training. Recollections of operations as seaman aboard HMS Vindictive, Home Fleet in GB coastal waters and Norway, 3/1940-6/1940: drafting to ship, 3/1940; operation of anti-aircraft guns aboard ship; duties on anti-aircraft gun; in action against German Air Force off Norway; move to Norway; clothing worn; rations; effects of lack of sleep; duties in Norwegian waters; reaction to first sight of casualties aboard HMS Eskimo; near accident with shell; fear of ammunition being hit. REEL 2 Continues: bombardment of Germans in Narvik area; fate of French Foreign Legion prisoner of war; fear of running out of ammunition and wear on guns; fatality amongst troops being carried aboard ship; character of ship. Recollections of operations as seaman aboard HMS Sheffield, 18th Cruiser Sqdn in Arctic and Mediterranean, 1942-1943: drafting to ship, 7/1942; landing party on Spitzbergen Island, Norway, 9/1941; attitude of Soviets towards Royal Navy personnel in Murmansk, Soviet Union; engagement with German heavy crusiers Admiral Hipper and Lützow during Battle of Barents Sea, 31/12/1942 including sinking of German destroyer Friedrich Eckholdt; weather conditions during storm; reaction to seeing ship sunk; impossibility of getting below decks during storm.
