REEL 1 Background in Rolvenden, GB, 1917-1939: family; education; employment as police officer; call-up for military service, 1942. Aspects of voyage from GB to India via South Africa, 1943: conditions aboard ship; social life in Cape Town, South Africa; arrival in Bombay, India, 10/1943. Aspects of period as NCO with 8th Field Regt, Royal Artillery, 25th Indian Infantry Div in India, 1943-1944: reaction to jungle training, 12/1943; composition of Ordnance QF 25 Pounder Field Gun crew and their tasks; problems of operating Ordnance QF 25 Pounder Field Gun in Far East; contact with Indian civilians; move to Chittagong; reputation of Japanese troops. Recollections of operations as NCO with 8th Field Regt, Royal Artillery, 25th Indian Infantry Div in Burma, 1944-1945: journey to Arakan, 3/1944; move to Maungdaw; action at Hill 551; Japanese use of artillery and captured British Ordnance QF 25 Pounder Guns; lack of water in dry season.
