REEL 1 Aspects of background in Paddington, London and Watford, 1898-1912: education at preparatory school, ca 1906-1912; interest in aviation and visits to flying exhibitions at Hendon airfield. Recollections of attending Charterhouse School, Godalming, 1912-1916: reception; fagging system; house system; conditions; daily routine; masters; question of academic or sporting priorities; form system. REEL 2 Continues: pre-war voluntary OTC activities and outbreak of war during summer camp, 4/8/1914; effects of war on school; compulsory wartime OTC activities including role as NCO and training; amusing story; continuing contact with Charterhouse, 1988. Recruitment to Royal Naval Air Service and initial training at Crystal Palace Depot, 12/1916-1/1917: reasons; prior interview; uniform; drill; fellow cadets.
