British officer served with 2nd Bn Buffs (Royal East Kent Regt), 131st Infantry Bde, 44th (Home Counties) Infantry Div in France and Belgium, 1939-1940; served with King's African Rifles and 4th Bn Gold Coast Regt, Royal West African Frontier Force in Kenya, Gold Coast, Gambia and Mauritius, 1940-1952; served with 23rd Bn King's African Rifles in Kenya, 1952-1953

Content description

REEL 1 Background in Battle, GB, 1919-1939: family; education; decision to join British Army. Aspects of operations as officer with 2nd Bn Buffs (Royal East Kent Regt), 131st Infantry Bde, 44th (Home Counties) Infantry Div in France and Belgium, 1939-1940: move to France, 9/1939; relations with French civilians; construction of fortifications in Lille area, France; taking up at anti-tank positions on Escaut Canal, Belgium, 5/1940. Aspects of period as officer with King's African Rifles and 4th Bn Gold Coast Regt in Kenya, Gold Coast, Gambia and Mauritius, 1940-1952: secondment to King's African Rifles, 9/1940; qualities of African troops; attachment to 4th Bn Gold Coast Regt in Gold Coast, 1942-1944; character of West African troops; posting to Gambia; sickness amongst British officers; return to 46th Bn King's African Rifles, 1945. REEL 2 Continues: qualities of Tanganyikan troops; internal security duties on Mauritius, 1947. Aspects of operations as officer with 23rd Bn King's African Rifles in Kenya, 1952-1953: formation of battalion due to declaration of State of Emergency, 20/10/1952; situation in Kiambu District, early 1953; meetings with local committees; return to Karatina District, 11/1953; organisation of sweeps against Mau Mau insurgents; appearance of Mau Mau insurgents; attitude of African troops towards internal security duties; opinion of Royal Air Force operations; problems of operating on Mount Kenya; attitude towards Mau Mau insurgents.
