British civilian officer served as pilot with Air Transport Auxiliary in GB, 1941-1945

Content description

REEL 1 Background in Wimbledon, GB, 1921-1939: family; education; employment; applying to join Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve as pilot. Aspects of training as pilot with Royal Air Force in GB, 1940-1941: deferred service prior to call up; reaction to declaration of Second World War, 9/1939; character of initial training; flying training at No 7 Elementary Flying Training School, RAF Desford; accommodation; daily routine; flying training at No 9 Service Flying Training School, RAF Hullavington; flying accident during night flying. Recollections of period as pilot with Air Transport Auxiliary in GB, 1941-1945: training recieved on joining Air Transport Auxiliary; accommodation at Luton Hoo; pattern of training. REEL 2 Continues: conversion course; ferry duties; threat of the weather; attitude to flying Fairey Barracuda; air taxi work; attending conversion courses; flying hours; flight preparations; use of Pilots Notes; use of spare time and leave; problems of straying over Bristol after heavy German Air Force attacks; attending Central Flying School instructors course at Marshall of Cambridge; instructing at No 5 Ferry Pilot Pool and No 5 (Training) Ferry Pool, ATA Thame including types of aircraft used for instruction. REEL 3 Continues: description of ferry pool; disbandment of Air Transport Auxiliary; memories of D-Day, 6/6/1944 and Victory celebrations, 1945; employment post-1945; attitude to serving with Air Transport Auxiliary during Second World War.
