Content description

REEL 1 Recollections of operations as officer with 1/8th Bn Sherwood Foresters, 148th (Territorial) Infantry Bde in Norway, 1940: reasons for joining Territorial Army, 1921; lack of equipment; original plan to establish base for regular troops; opinion of commanding officer; battalion officers who led troops back to GB after surrender; effects of lack of training and equipment; presence of company of South Wales Borderers in unit; effects on training of winter, 1939/1940; headquarters company; initial impressions of Norway; lack of contact with Norwegians; lack of formal orders and attitude to situation; unloading of stores at Lillehammer. REEL 2 Continues: lack of maps; nature of move; clothing; deployment in defensive position north of Lillehammer; condition of troops and morale; problems of digging in hard ground; wounding in back by shrapnel; evacuation and treatment; return to battalion; acquisition of car; relations with 1/5th Bn Leicestershire Regt; relief of battalion by 15th Infantry Bde; decision to evacuate; calling on commanding officer of 1st Bn Green Howards (Alexandra, Princess of Wales's Own Yorkshire Regt); nature of withdrawal; formation of composite battalion; transport to Åndalsnes; German Air Force incendiary bombing of woods around Åndalsnes; allocation of captain's cabin aboard HMS Sheffield; effects of lack of sleep.
