REEL 1 Background in Colchester and Ipswich, 1896-1914: work as tobacconist's assistant; activities with Boy Scout Movement. Aspects of enlistment and training as private with 1/5th Bn Suffolk Regt, Norfolk and Suffolk Bde, East Anglian Div and 153rd Bde, 54th (East Anglian) Div in GB, 11/1914-7/1915: recruitment to A Coy, 1/5th Bn Suffolk Regt at Suffolk Regimental Depot, Gibraltar Barracks, Bury St Edmunds, 11/1914; training at Colchester, Thetford and Watford, 12/1914-7/1915: training; conditions of service. Aspects of voyage aboard HMT Aquitania from GB to Mudros, Lemnos Island, Greece, 29/7/1915-6/8/1915: question of destination; send off at Watford, GB, 7/1915; conditions on board; problems with vaccinations. Recollections of operations as private with 1/5th Bn Suffolk Regt, 153rd Bde, 54th (East Anglia) Div at Gallipoli, Turkey, 10/8/1915-2/9/1915: landing at A Beach, Suvla Bay; terrain; prior training as signaller in GB; casualties during advance, 12/8/1915.
