REEL 1 Background in GB and New Zealand, 1892-1914. Ruse to enlist as cook in 3rd Auckland Coy, Auckland Bn at Auckland, 12/8/1914. Recollections of period in camp at Auckland, 8/1914-9/1914: duties as cook; promotion to lance corporal; conditions of service; relationships with NCOs and officers. Recollections of voyage aboard SS Waimaru to Alexandria, Egypt, 9/1914-12/1914: initial sailing and return due to fear of German East Asiatic Sqdn; escort; conditions; absence of escort during mission to sink Emeden; use of Arabic in assisting disembarkation, 3/12/1914. Recollections of period at Zeitoun Camp, 12/1914-4/1915: attack of dysentery; water discipline during route march; appointment as Bde headquarters interpreter and mounted policeman. REEL 2 Continues: Aspects of voyage aboard SS Waimaru, 9/1914-12/1915: origins of ANZAC trops; officer's loss of nerve; story of rifle inspection; quality of troops; conditions.
