REEL 1 Recollections of period commanding 231st Infantry Bde, 50th (Northumbrian) Infantry Div during preparations for Normandy landings in GB, 1944: background to being chosen by General Bernard Montgomery to command brigade; degree of prior experience of amphibious assault; brigade's morale on return from Middle East; importance of commanding officer to form rapport with men; amphibious training in Scotland; planning process for Normandy landings; liaison with American units; proposed role of brigade during landings; intelligence about opposing German forces; supervision of battalion plans; the brigade plan; artillery and engineer support available. REEL 2 Continues: opinion of Sherwood Rangers Yeomanry; combined exercises to rehearse landings; use of rocket firing landing craft; naval fire plan; liaison with Royal Navy and Royal Navy; attachment of No 47 (Royal Marine) Commando to brigade; attitude on eve of landings; morale of troops; offer of specialised armour; plans to land Sherman Duplex Drive Tanks prior to infantry landings.
