Recollections of period as official war artist in GB, Middle East, India, Burma and North West Europe, 1939-1945: background to becoming war artist; drawing troops training at Guards Regimental Depot, Caterham; drawings made of Auxiliary Territorial Service personnel; voyage aboard HMT Highland Monarch from GB to Egypt via South Africa , 12/1941-1/1942; memories of artists Edward Bawden and Edward Ardizonne; relations with authorities; drawings made at hospital; drawings made on airfield; method of transporting work back to London; socialising with fellow artists in Cairo, Egypt; attachment as war artist to British Ninth Army in Palestine and French Syria; brief attachment to Free French forces; attitude of French towards British.
