British officer served as observer with 12 Sqdn, Royal Flying Corps in France, 11/1915-2/1916; trained as pilot with Royal Flying Corps Station Farnborough and Royal Flying Corps Station Montrose, GB, 3/1916-5/1916; served as pilot and instructor with 36 and 33 Sqdns, Royal Flying Corps in GB, 6/1916-1/1918; commanded 100 Sqdn, Independent Air Force in France, 2/1918-11/1918

REEL 1 Aspects of enlistment with Royal Flying Corps in GB, 9/1915: visit with Officers Training Corps to Farnborough, 1907; abortive attempt to join Indian Air Corps in India, 1914; background to recruitment to Royal Flying Corps; witnessing activities of German air observation aircraft and opinion of Royal Flying Corps whilst serving with 1st Bn York and Lancaster Regt, 83rd Bde, 28th Div on Western Front, 1915. Recollections of operations as observer with 12 Sqdn, Royal Flying Corps at St Omer, France, 11/1915-2/1916: difficulty in using and moving Lewis Gun with 'candlestick' gun mountings; reconnaissance missions; question of adequacy of observer and pilot training; relations between pilot and observer and question of influence of rank. REEL 2 Continues: use of variety of aircraft types; nature of flying missions; opinion of Captain George Lawrence; story of diversionary flight in Royal Aircraft Factory R.E.7 over Lille, France including attack by German aircraft, Immelmann's tactics, difficulty in using Lewis Gun with 'candlestick' gun mountings, pilot's refusal to withdraw and degree of damage to aircraft; effect of weather on flying; frequency of reconnaissance missions; problem fitting machine guns to aircraft; effect on morale of success of German Fokker Eindecker E III; question of effectiveness of bombing missions. Recollections of period as instructor with 36 and 33 (Home Defence) Sqdns, Royal Flying Corps in GB, 1916-1917: setting up Royal Flying Corps Station Cramlington, 5/1916; fog problem and consequent crash landing. REEL 4 Continues: training and home defence roles of 36 Sqdn; nature of night flying; training pilots in night flying; flying anti-Zeppelin night patrols and tactics employed; co-operation with Royal Naval Air Service in experiments to determine visibility of submarines from air and bombing test on wreck.
