Roderick Buchanan's film and photography installation considers the legacy of the Troubles in Northern Ireland through the stories of two Scottish flute bands. The exhibition provides a unique insight into two communities today still actively engaged in the future of British Loyalism and Irish Republicanism.
Irish Republicans and Northern Irish Protestants have always sought and found support in Scotland. During the Troubles bandsmen from Northern Ireland would travel to Scotland regularly in support of Scotland's major parades, Scottish people in return would do the same for the big parades in Northern Ireland. Fraternal links were forged between the bandsmen in both countries, many of which continue today. Membership in these flute bands is strong and an expression of solidarity with either Loyalist or Republican ideals.
Legacy has at its centre Scots Irish/Irish Scots, two films displayed simultaneously in a pendulum edit giving one side sound while the other is silent. One film follows Black Skull Corps of Fife and Drum around the walls of Londonderry on the 320th anniversary of lifting the siege. The second film shadows Parkhead Republican Flute Band during the annual Easter Rising Parade in Derry 2010.
In 2008 the Imperial War Museum's Art Commissions Committee offered an art commission in the form of a personal response to the legacy of the Troubles. The commission was awarded to Scottish artist Roderick Buchanan to create a film work following the professional, personal and social lives of two Scottish flute bands during the 2009/10 marching season in Northern Ireland.
