text: His Service Star By DANIEL M. HENDERSON Author of "The Road to France"
I passed your way and watched you when "Old Glory" was unfurled:
I met your eyes - I saw the flag transfiguring your world!
You were not clad in khaki then, and yet how well you showed
That if the banner bade you come, its path would be your road!
I passed again; a second flag was streaming from the spar,
And on its field of blood and snow I saw a single star:
A little flag - but when it leaped to meet my gaze, I knew
It symbolized a fighting man - I knew that man was you!
God bless you overseas, dear lad, and gird you in your fight;
And bring you safely to your home when He has crowned the right;
And give you, where the camp-fire flames upon that darkened shore,
A vision of the holy star that glorifies your door!
