A Grã-

[Aspects of war. Across all Africa liberated from Axis Occupation. 1. In June 1940, Germany controlled the Italian territories in Africa
and, through the intercession of the Vichy government, the vast French territories as well. 2. At the end of June 1940. Great Britain
recognised the movements of the Free French Forces. French Equatorial Africa crossed over to the Allies between August-November, 1940. 3.
The winter of 1940-spring 1941. British troops assisted by Abyssinian patriots liberated Italian Abyssinia and Italy. British Forces under
General Wavell destroyed Graziani's army of 250,000 men. A first step in the victorious defence of Egypt. 4. Winter, 1941 – Spring 1942.
British forces defend Egypt, fighting against the superior forces of the Afrika Korps. British forces occupy Madagascar, which transfers to
the mandate of the combatant French forces. 5. Autumn 1942, Anglo-North American forces take possession of Morocco and Algeria. Great
Britain achieves a decisive victory over Rommel at El-Alamein. It transfers from the jurisdiction of the United Nations mandate to West
Africa and French Somalia. 6. Spring 1943, British forces pursue Rommel, taking Tripoli, through Mareth, entering Tunisia and finally
joining up with the French and North Africans to definitely annihilate the Axis forces at Cabo Bom. From the start of the battle at El-
Alamein, over 300,000 prisoners-of-war were taken. Africa is liberated! In this miraculous operation, British, French and North African
troops fought alongside each other. The greatest laurels for the cleansing of the African continent were won by the forces of the British
Empire and its Dominions who cooperated with them. Great Britain began to plan the operation when in 1940 it found itself alone facing the
Germans. Now, three years later, at the cost of heroic deeds and formidable efforts, it has achieved the major part in liberating 14,
880,000 square kilometres of land, with a population of 54,336,000 inhabitants. This magnificent fact is a glorious page in British history
which will be blessed by all those interested in the wellbeing of Africa. Press and Information Service of the British
Embassy.]
