During the First World War, a combination of drought, poor harvests and the loss of agricultural workers to the armed
forces badly effected Canadian agricultural production. In response The Canada Food Board was formed with the aims of increasing food
production, persuading civilians to grow their own crops and discouraging the hoarding of food.
Besides issuing a series of posters, the Canada Food Board produced recipe books (as shown on this postrer) and established work
programmes, such as 'Soldiers of the Soil' (see PST 12507).
