The New Zealand Rifle Brigade (Earl of Liverpool's Own) was formed in June 1915, comprising HQ and 1 & 2 Battalions. 3 & 4 Battalions were formed in September 1915. On the formation of the New Zealand Division in February 1916 the RB formed its third Brigade. From October 1916, RB patches ("blazes") were authorised to be worn 1.5" below the shoulder straps on both sleeves. The three basic shapes (star, square, triangle) were again approved for the Regiment in March 1930.
