M1915 Respirator Carrier (containing Filter Tins) : German
A khaki-grey canvas bag of cylindrical shape that opens out to reveal a large compartment divided into three. The bag is fitted with two matching button-back belt loops and these are located at the back of the bag, permitting it to be worn hung horizontally at the leather waste belt beneath the rifle ammunition pouches for quick access. A central button-down tab permits the carrier to be opened, revealing two empty tins.
The M1915 Carrier was initially designed to carry the M1915 Gummimaske respirator, complete with its own carrying tin within. For quick access many soldiers dispensed with the fabric carrier, preferring to carry the tin habitually slung over the shoulder which was more beneficial in an emergency. However, given that the carrier remained effective in deadening the irritating sound of metallic movement it is the likely reason that so many of these carriers were still in use by assault troops in 1918 who were by then, using the M1917 Lederschutzmaske.
