Physical description
Triangular-shaped weatherproof cape/shelter quarter, made of duck material and printed with 'Oakleaf A' disruptive colours in spring/summer shades one side, and in autumn/winter the other. Of interest is the panel of fabric sewn to the head aperture that is made of a previous pattern of camouflage, being of the earlier 'plain tree' form.
History note
Part of the Waffen-SS soldier's personal equipment, the Zeltbahn could be used either as a personal waterproof cape or by joining with three others by the integral metal buttons to form a rudimentry tent. Being of camouflage print, the Waffen-SS zeltbahn with its distinctive pattern was often favoured as an aid to personal camouflage in addition to the smocks and helmet covers in common use by that branch. It was also common practice by some to have specially-tailored garments made by unit tailors, using the zeltbahn as the basic fabric.
