badge, formation, Australian, HQ 23rd Australian Infantry Brigade
Shoulder patch to HQ 23 Australian Infantry Brigade, being a red horizontal oval with grey backing, in this example the backing cut back flush with the red oval.
Worn by HQ 23 Australian Infantry Brigade 1940 - 1945.
Brigade raised in 1940, comprising 2/21, 2.22 & 2/40 Australian Infantry Battalions.
The grey backing indicates that this badge once had the grey border associated with AIF units, hence the identification of 23 Brigade rather than 10th Brigade. (HQ 10th Australian Infantry Brigade, a CMF unit, had a red horizontal oval patch, but worn full size with no grey backing (Glyde 35/801)). The fact that in this patch the border has been cut off flush with the central motif could denote a change of status to CMF, either for the unit or an individual wearer. (For an account of the complex subject of the grey border, including circumstances where the border had to be removed, see Glyde, pp. 226 – 228.)
