Physical description
Lightweight field service cap (side cap) made of light grey ribbed cloth. Stencilled to upper left of the cap are the letters, 'V.V.R', and the cap has two small gilt crested buttons sewn to the front with an Imperial Crown above the stylized text, 'Canada'. Inside, the unlined cap has a brown artificial leather sweatband.
History note
Formed in Alberta, the Veteran's Volunteer Reserve was created in 1940 to participate in patriotic and morale boosting activities, such as raising salvage and scrap metal collections, bond raising schemes and other home front related topics.
William Mair was born in Edmonton, Alberta in 1890 and served with The 49th Battalion (Edmonton Regiment). Raised in November, 1914, the Battalion was posted to France in October of 1915 as part of the 3rd Canadian Division, and demobilized in Canada in March, 1919. Mair was known to have been gassed during the conflict and later worked for the Canadian Railways, living until the ripe age of 98.
