Physical description

Single-breasted blouse of jungle green open-weave lightweight aertex fabric with stand & fall collar, button-fastened epaulettes, fly-front, pleated breast pockets with scalloped flaps and concealed buttons and one internal pocket. All buttons are of the dished brass type.

Label

Of similar cut to the standard Battledress uniform worn in Europe, the 1943 pattern Jungle Green Battledress was a positive step in the design of a uniform that was fit for purpose for soldiers operating in a jungle environment. Previously British Army and Commonwealth troops had worn khaki drill in Africa, India, and the Far East since the 19th Century. The introduction of a better ventilated aertex shirt in the 1930s was an advantage in terms of comfort; however the Malaya and Burma campaigns of 1942 confirmed that khaki coloured uniforms were hopelessly inefficient in the jungle. Stocks of conventional uniforms of KD were later dyed to a shade more suitable and these were used as a universal alternative, being replaced from 1943 with the "JG BD". Worn with long trousers made of drill of the same shade, the blouse was criticized as being lightweight it tended to ride up from the trousers and expose the man's back and midriff, creating more problems especially when wearing personal equipment. Where possible a four-pocket JG aertex bush shirt was preferred as it could tuck into the trousers.
