Physical description
Single-breasted jacket of olive drab (shade no. 51) or 'chocolate' wool elastique, featuring an open peaked collar, button-down shoulder epaulettes with a cross-stitched base, front fastening of three gilt US army pattern buttons and one plastic button concealed by the waistbelt, pleated breast pockets with scalloped button flaps, slash skirt pockets with rectangular button flaps, detachable waistbelt of matching fabric with brass buckle fitted through a belt loop to either side of the waist, a band of gold mohair braid around each cuff and a rear vent. Internally, the jacket is fully lined in olive drab satin fabric and has a horizonal slash pocket to the right breast.
Fitted to the outer end of each epaulette is a single gilt oak leaf, denoting the rank of Major. To each collar point is fitted the gilt 'U.S.' officer pattern insignia, while to each lapel the silver and gilt prop and wing branch insignia of the Army Air Forces. Sewn to the left shoulder is the formation badge of the Army Air Forces, embroidered in gold wire on a circular blue backing, while to the lower left cuff are sewn two overseas service bars in silver wire on an olive drab backing. Fitted above the left breast pocket is the silver qualification badge or 'wings' of Command Pilot, while below are the following medal ribbons: unidentified (with two star devices); Asiatic–Pacific Campaign Medal (with three star devices); World War I Victory Medal; French Croix de Guerre 1914-18 (with bronze oakleaves device); French Médaille Militaire.
There is staining or discolouration on the upper-left sleeve and the left shoulder of the jacket.
