navy blue four buttoned double-breasted jacket with two hip pockets. On each shoulder a navy blue shoulder title with the letters R.N.X.S in red thread. On the right arm the RN category badge of a Radio Operator below which a circular badge with the letters AT. Both badges in red thread. The uniform jacket is the standard WRNS pattern for junior ratings.
Mrs Sylvia Barron (nee Seymour) joined the RNXS in 1982 after answering a recruiting advertisement for RN Auxiliary Service in the Southampton Evening Echo. During her four years service Mrs Barron was stationed at HMS Wessex, Southampton and spent every wednesday evening drilling in teleprinting and radio communications. She attended a course at HMS Drake, Plymouth leading to a qualification as a communicator using the tape relay system. She also took part in weekend/annual exercises as a radio operator on the minesweeper Portisham. Mrs Barron was paid a weekly attendance allowance of £2 plus travel expenses. Mrs Barron left the RNAuxS in 1986 when her husband's job necessitated a move to London. See file for additional details.
