Air Chief Marshal Sir Alfred Guy Roland Garrod GBE KCB MC DFC ( 1891- 1965)
Guy Garrod, the third son of the late H B Garrod, Barrister at Law, was born on 13 April 1891. Educated at Bradfield and University College, Oxford from where he graduated MA in 1913, Garrod was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant into the 3rd Bn The Leicestershire Regiment in 1914, transferring to the Royal Flying Corps in 1915, first serving as an Observer and later as a Pilot. He was awarded the MC in 1915, the DFC in 1919 and was three times Mentioned in Despatches. Garrod was promoted group captain 1932, air commodore 1936, air vice -marshal 1939, air marshal 1945 and air chief marshal 1946. He retired from the RAF in 1948. He held a number of senior staff appointments including Air Officer Commanding Armament Group, RAF Eastchurch, Kent 1937-38; Director Equipment 1938-40; Air Member for Training 1940-43. He was deputy AOC in C, RAF. India 1943-44; Deputy to Air C in C, Air Command SE Asia 1944-45; Deputy to Air C in C. Allied Air Forces in the Mediterranean 1945; C in C RAF. in the Mediterranean and Middle East 1945. From 1946-48, Garrod was a Member of the Military Staff Committee at the UN and Head of the RAF Delegation in Washington DC, USA. Following retirement, he served as Chairman of the Air League of the British Empire. Garrod was a Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society ( FRAeS) and an Hon LLD from the University of Aberdeen. He was appointed GBE (1948); KCB (1943). He was a Commander of the Legion of Merit (USA), held the Chinese, Order of The Cloud and Banner, and was a Knight Commander of The Order of George I (Greece). Guy Garrod died on 3 January 1965. The Dept of Exhibits holds some of Garrod's RAF Full Dress and Mess Dress (Ref: UNI44; UNI 1377-1378; UNI 1435-1437). The Dept of Documents holds an interesting collection of Garrod's papers, including photocopies of two flying log books, August 1922 - February 1945, recording his flights at the School of Army cooperation, RAF Old Sarum, August 1922 - April 1923; RAF Staff College, Andover, April 1923 - September 1927, RAF North Weald, September 1927 - January 1928, with Oxford University Air Squadron, January 1928 - December 1930, at Air HQ Iraq, February 1931 - October 1932; at Imperial Defence HQ, April 1933 - June 1936; HQ No 23 Group, June 1936 - February 1937; HQ Armament Group, February 1937 - March 1938; Air Ministry, March 1938 - April 1943; finally in India as Deputy Allied Air C in C SEAC, October 1943 - February 1945; together with photocopies of three very interesting letters from Lord Louis Mountbatten praising his work at SEAC and criticising Lieutenant-General Sir Oliver Leese, February-July 1945; the citation for his Legion of Merit, three letters of praise from US General G E Stratemeyer; and newspaper cuttings relating to the dissolution of the Mediterranean Allied Air Force, August 1945.
