Description
Physical description
One-piece step-in style flying suit of rubberised khaki cotton fabric. The suit features a wide turn-down collar that can be worn up and fastened across the neck by means of two buttons fitted to the underside of the collar's right side, while there are buttons fitted to the inner neckband for the attachment of a fur collar. To the front of the suit, slightly right of centre, is a vertical zipper opening from neck to crotch, with a vertical flap fastened by three buttons situated at the crotch, slightly left of center. Stitched to the front-left chest at a slight angle is a large open patch pocket with rounded corners, accessible through its right side, with an open-topped fur-lined patch pocket to the front of either knee. There is a vertical zipper opening at the side of either hip for internal access, while zippers are also fitted to the sleeves and ankles. At the rear of the suit is a half-belt-style waist adjustment strap with two brass sliding friction buckles. At either underarm are three metal ventilation eyelets. Internally, the suit has a beige linen lining.
Drawn in black pen on the front chest pocket is the word 'ZOOTIE!' in stylised lettering.

Intended to be worn over normal uniform dress, the 1930 pattern 'Sidcot' suit derived from earlier patterns used towards the end of the First World War and was to become an all-purpose flying garment used throughout the Second World War. To provide added warmth alternative linings could be added by buttoning them in internally. Another version was the 1940 pattern, of similar cut, but made of olive gabardine, improved in 1942 (1941 pattern) by having electric wiring fitted to provided heated boots and gloves (but not the suit).
