Description
Physical description
Badge of Merit, Girls Finishing School, Sime Road Camp, Far East Civilian Internee. Comprising a square of wood with hand drawn badge on one side a piece of wire through the top for suspension.
Label
'Badge associated with Vilma Howes and her experiences as a Second World War internee held at Sime Road Internment Camp, Singapore. Vilma Howe (nee Stubbs) wrote of her time in Sime Road Camp: 'During their captivity a group of women got together and began to educate the younger generation to relieve their boredom and the stress of captive confinement.
Children were split into age groups with teachers "assigned" to each group. Lessons were held outdoors as children sat on crude wooden stools, shaded from blistering sun by tall trees. There were no notebooks, any piece of paper found with "space" on it was utilized.
As the war ended, teacher Freddy Bloom made and awarded Vilma Stubbs and each of her small group of pupils the wooden 'Finishing School' plaque shown. Among others in this group were Janet Gilfillan and Cecilia Lloyd Owen.
Vilma was also taught the Pitmans Shorthand method by teacher Sybil Mackenzie. She is ever grateful for the selfless dedication of these women towards her tuition while in Sime Road captivity.'
