Object description

Propellor blade section painted with a scene depicting a German Drachen observation going down in flames with a Morane-Saulnier BB aircraft and anti-aircraft explosions in the sky. The Morane BB was operated by 1, 3 and 60 Squadrons, Royal Flying Corps, only.

section of propeller (L 45cm x W 20cm); a hook has been fitted to the upper edge.

Label

Section of propeller blade on which is painted a colourful depiction of First World War period aerial combat: an Allied fighter flies to left, leaving, in the background a smoking observation balloon falling to earth. The windmill (lower left) suggests Flanders associations? The propeller section was painted by J Willie, who gave it to (39225) Sergeant C M Smith (MM), 76th Field Ambulance, Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC).
