Pair of cufflinks in presentation box. The box lid bears the following printed (in blue) inscription: 'This is guaranteed by the British Red Cross Society, to whom it has been given by H. M. War Office , to be piece of the Zepp L 21, which was brought down on September 3rd, 1916.'

Fragments of salvaged metal from the First World War German airship SL11 made into a pair souvenir cufflinks and sold to raise money for the Red Cross. The airship was shot down in flames at Cuffley, Hertfordshire by Lieutenant William Leefe Robinson on 2-3 September 1916. The SL11 was the first airship to be brought down on British soil, Robinson won the VC for the action. Note that after its destruction, the SL11 was initially wrongly identified as the 'L21' by some British authorities; this error was for a time perpetuated by the rapidly produced 'souvenirs' -as evidenced by the reference to the 'L 21' on the box lid
