Sample of loose erstaz coffee in envelope, comprising a mix of dark brown granules and fibre
Ersatz coffee, made of non-specific organic material (often acorns) to replace real coffee, which was not available by the end of the First World War due to the Allied blockade of German ports.
EPH 7839 -EPH 7885. Items were found together in a Grey Crate containing many examples of ersatz material. The crate was moved from A17 to Duxford on 14/Oct/2005. Where envelopes or OHMS labels were found with the items, the handwriting is the same. A label stating 'Major General Malcolm Brit. Mil. Mission' was also found in the same crate, which is now kept in file. The handwriting on this is very similar, perhaps the same.
EPH 8709 -8715 and EPH 8570 -8600. Items were donated by the Department of War Trade Intelligence: many show similar labels and handwriting, it is likely that the objects in the Grey Crate described above were donated by the same Government Department.
