Description

Physical description

Pull-along toy dog (Daschund), comprising a flat wooden cut-out dog mounted on four wheels with a string attached to a metal ring at the front for pulling along, the dog is in three hinged parts which are painted brown with a painted green base and painted red wheels, the front left wheel is missing and has been replaced with a foam 'wheel'.

History note

This pull-along Daschund toy dog was made for Christopher Duke and his brother from an old apple crate fixed together with pieces of scrap metal. It was one of several homemade toys made for the children of the Duke family by German prisoners of war who worked on Wested Farm near Swanley in Kent during the final years of the Second World War. The Duke children had very few toys so these homemade gifts were cherished by them. Walter Klemenz was one of the German prisoners that the Duke family got to know well. Walter was older than the other prisoners and Christopher's little sister Felicity reminded Walter of his own daughter back in Germany. The Duke family shared Christmas lunch with their German friends and treated them as they did the other workers on the farm. The family's kindness to them was not forgotten. Walter Klemenz returned to Germany in 1948 and wrote back to the family regularly in the following years. The toy dog given to the Duke family's children was one of the the inspirations behind the Michael Morpurgo book 'Little Manfred'. Morpurgo was commisioned by IWM to write a children's book to accompany an IWM temporary exhibition, 'Once Upon A Wartime'. Morpurgo and the book's illustrator, Michael Foreman, were touched by the story of the dog and wanted to explore the idea further. The dog written about in the book was named Little Manfred and a fictional story was created around him. The story focuses on the friendship between Walter, a German prisoner of war who was sent to Britain during the Second World War; and Grace, a ten year old British girl and the daughter of the host family he stays with. Walter returns to Germany but meets with Grace again many years later.
