Donor's father, Fritz Halder, was a medical officer in the German army in the Second World War. He was drafted in 1939, and served first in France and Belgium. In 1942 his unit was relocated to the eastern front near the Latvia/Russia border. In his letters he often described the terrible conditions in the field hospitals, particularly in winter.
When the donor's birth was imminent he managed to arrange for leave. The chief medical officer arranged for him to leave by train on 31 July 1942. On the way, an army train travelling away from the front had run over mines. While looking after the wounded, he suffered a heart attack. He was taken to the field hospital in Rositten, Latvia. There, he sent a personal message back to his family. By the following morning, he was dead.
A delegation from his unit stationed 250 km east of Rositten came for his funeral which took place on the 4th. They also decided to adopt the donor as thier godchild, transferred a small sum of money and had the bed made for her. Later, the whole unit was taken prisoner.
