Round-faced compass in metal casing, there is a hinged cover on the front engraved with the following inscription 'General Sir J. French August 12th 1914 from Greville Bagot-Chester "Success", there is a large metal suspension loop at the top of the case, the outside of the compass case is undecorated.
Field Marshal Sir John French made his reputation as a great Cavalry leader during the South African War (Boer War). He was universally successful in all the operations in which in he was engaged.
He later became Inspector General of the Forces, Chief of the Imperial General Staff and commanded the British Armies in France during 1914 and 1915.
