This beer-mug belonged to Laurie Vogel. Laurie was the son of German-Irish immigrants and a was a committed marxist. In the late 1920's he joined the Young Communist League and in 1936, aged 22, travelled to Europe with a brief to find Dachau concentration camp. Within left-wing circles, it was known that such camps existed in Germany and that political opponents of the Nazis, including Communists, were interned there. Vogel visited the town of the Dachau, but was unable to locate the camp.
