History note
This badge includes most principal elements from the badges of the four component regiments, the dragon of The Buffs, the Prince of Wales's coronet and plumes of the Middlesex and the Garter of the Royal Sussex. Other elements were included in the collar badges and buttons.
One element missing from the new badge was the Paschal Lamb, originally the badge of "The Queen's Royal Regiment (West Surrey)", the senior British line regiment, which in the 1958 amalgamations was carried forward as an element in the badge of "The Queen's Royal Surrey Regiment". Between 1966 and 1992, this heritage continued in the name of the new Queen's Regiment and thereafter in the sub-title of "The Princess of Wale's Royal Regiment (Queen's and Royal Hampshires)".
The Queen's Regiment was formed on 31 December 1966 from the four regiments of the Home Counties Brigade. 1st Battalion "The Queen's Royal Surrey Regiment" became 1st Battalion "The Queen's Regiment (Queen's Surreys)", 1st Battalion "The Queen's Own Buffs, The Royal Kent Regiment", became 2nd Battalion "The Queen's Regiment (Queen's Own Buffs)", 1st Battalion "The Royal Sussex Regiment" became 3rd Battalion "The Queen's Regiment (Royal Sussex)", and 1st Battalion "The Middlesex Regiment (Duke of Cambridge's Own)" became 4th Battalion "The Queen's Regiment (DCO Middlesex)".
On 1 July 1968 the heritage titles were dropped and the battalions became 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th Battalions The Queen's Regiment. In June 1970, 4th Battalion was disbanded and personnel distributed to the other three battalions. Between June and September 1992 the remaining battalions were disbanded and on 9 September they amalgamated, together with 1st Battalion "The Royal Hampshire Regiment", to become 1st and 2nd Battalions of the newly formed "The Princess of Wales's Royal Regiment (Queen's and Royal Hampshire)".
