History note
The "Mercian Volunteers" was formed on 1 April 1967 as a TAVR II (liable for service in support of NATO) unit from surviving elements of the TA (Home Defence) Battalions of the Mercian Brigade, (Staffordshire, Cheshire, Worcestershire and Sherwood Foresters Regiments). In common with similar units formed around this time, the Companies were given heritage sub-titles. HQ and C Companies (Staffordshire), A Company (Cheshire), B Company (Worcestershire) and D Company (Sherwood Foresters). On 1 April an E (Cheshire) Company was raised from a cadre of 4th/7th (T) Battalion The Cheshire Regiment. On 1 April 1975 a second battalion was raised and the existing "Mercian Volunteers" was re-designated 1st Battalion Mercian Volunteers. Its E (Cheshire) Company was transferred to the 2nd Battalion as its C Company.
History note
On 5 April 1988 the 1st Battalion was broken up, becoming part of three other units, 3rd (Volunteer) Battalion Staffordshire Regiment, 3rd (Volunteer) Battalion Cheshire Regiments and 4th (Volunteer) Battalion Worcestershire and Sherwood Foresters Regiment.
History note
The 2nd Battalion Mercian Volunteers was raised on 1 April 1975 by the re-organization and re-designation of the "Light Infantry and Mercian Volunteers". In this case no heritage sub-titles appear to have been assigned to the Companies. On 5 April 1988 the Battalion was disbanded, the Companies being dispersed and re-designated to three other units, 4th (Volunteer) Battalion Worcestershire and Sherwood Foresters Regiment, 3rd (Volunteer) Battalion The Staffordshire Regiment and 3rd (Volunteer) Battalion the Cheshire Regiment.
