Physical description
A silver coloured shield with a raised border enclosing a large Wehrmacht eagle perched on a cross of the design used in the Iron Cross on which centrally a swastika. At the foot of the shield, CHOLM / 1942. The shield is fixed to an oval of grey-green wool with prongs and a backing plate, and a further oval of grey-green wool is partially glued over the backing plate.

The shield was awarded to all military and police personnel who took part in the defence of Fortress Cholm, Cholm being a small town in the Kalinin region of Russia. It was designed Polizei-Rottwachtmeister Schlimmer of the Reserve Police Battalion Cholm and completed by Professor Richard Klein of Munich. It was of stamped metal finished with silver paint. It was awarded for the period 21 January to 5 May 1942.
