History note
The 4th/7th Royal Dragoon Guards was formed in 1922 from the amalgamation of the 4th Royal Irish Dragoon Guards and the 7th Dragoon Guards (Princess Royal's). The year of amalgamation is represented in Roman numerals MCMXXII on the badge adopted at that time. The Star is based on that of the Order of St. Patrick, referring to the Irish ancestry of the 4th, and the St. George's Cross references the Order of the Garter. The coronet represents the honour title "Princess Royal's", granted in 1788 to the 7th at the same time as their conversion to Dragoon Guards. The Regiment was further amalgamated in 1992 with the 5th Royal Inniskilling Dragoon Guards to form the Royal Dragoon Guards.
