The ATA was formed after the outbreak of the Second World War to employ civil pilots, including women, who were not eligible for military service. Tasked with carrying out vital second-line duties, men and women with 'A' grade flying licence and 250 hours of experience were elible to join. The ATA uniform closely followed that of the RAF while also echoing that of British civil airlines.
