This badge is that of the Gloucestershire Regiment, and derives from an award to the 28th of Foot for its action at the battle of Alexandria in 1801 when it fought in two ranks, back to back, to fight off two French attacks.
History note
"The Royal Gloucestershire and Hampshire Regiment" was scheduled to be created in 1970 by the amalgamation of the "Gloucestershire Regiment" and the "Royal Hampshire Regiment". Although preparations for this amalgamation were far advanced, clearly to the point of having agreed patterns of all relevant badges being manufactured, the plans were cancelled following a change of government. Mergers did eventually occur. On 9 September 1992 the Hampshires amalgamated with the "Queen's Regiment" to form the "Princess of Wales's Royal Regiment (Queen's and Hampshires)". The Glosters followed on 27 July 1994 when they amalgamated with the "Duke of Edinburgh's Royal Regiment" to create the "Royal Gloucestershire, Berkshire and Wiltshire Regiment". In 2007 this Regiment amalgamated with "The Devonshire and Dorset Light Infantry to become "1st Battalion The Rifles". Note that in 1970 the tradition of the Glosters' "back badge" was to be carried forward to the new regiment and the same applied to the further amalgamations of 1994 and 2007.
