Soviet AKM rifle; rifle & sling & magazine sling and magazine decorated by Afghans.

Label

The AKM (Avtomat Kalashnikova Modernizirovanniy) was a development of the AK47 assault rifle (see FIR 6417), being adopted for service by the Soviet armed forces in 1959. It has since become the most widely produced of the Kalashnikov family of weapons. The AKM differed from the AK47 in having a stamped, rather than cast, body. Some small internal changes were also made, to enhance the controllability of the weapon when firing in automatic mode. This particular AKM was used by Afghan "Mujahideen" fighting against the Soviet army during the USSR's ill-fated intervention in Afghanistan between 1979 and 1989. It features a decorative locally-made fabric sling.
