12 bore cartridge, No. 6 shot, 'Holland & Holland Special Loading', Eley-Kynoch
21/2" buff, glazed, paper-cased, low brass cartridge with rolled turnover. The head is brass-plated steel. Yellow top wad. Loaded with No. 6 lead shot.
A game load for Holland & Holland, a maker of 'best' sporting shotguns and rifles. During the 19th century, it was not unusual for gunmakers to load cartridges 'in house' from bought-in components, either to their own specification or that of their customers. During the 20th century, it became more usual for those gunmakers who wanted to sell cartridges with their own name on them to order them in bulk from an ammunition manufacturer. This style of headstamp was used from 1930 to 1963, but the likelihood is that the cartridge is pre-war.
