Physical description
2 sectioned cartridges & cartridge
two sectioned examples, one loaded with a full metal jacketed bullet and a granular propellent, the other with a soft-nosed expanding bullet and dummy cordite, and a complete example loaded with a soft-nosed expanding bullet.
History note
Description: one of a series of sectioned inert cartridges prepared for display during the early days of the Imperial War Museum. In this case the original caption is missing. The British army had no armour piercing ammunition in 1914, and found itself faced with sniper shields, gun shields and trench works. A number of heavy calibre sporting rounds were tried, including .470 Nitro Express, .577 Nitro Express and .600 Nitro Express. Their bullets were designed for rapid transmission of energy to dangerous game, rather than piercing steel armour, so did not perform well in the latter role.
