This is pre-First World War, or possibly war-time, ammunition. Eley catalogues listed this cartridge from 1898 to 1919. C. 25% of the pre-war production of 7.63 mm Mauser C96 pistols came to Britain, where the pistols were quite popular. A number were bought by army officers at the time of the Boer War, where the pistol's long-range capabilities were appreciated. Winston Churchill used one at Omdurman, and it has been suggested that he was the first person to have used a self-loading pistol in combat.
