Federal : 9 x 17R : 9 mm Browning Short & .380 Auto Hydra Shok hollow point
case : head : rimless
Description: an expanding load for police or self defence. Since the Second World War, much developmental work has taken place to improve the terminal performance of pistol cartridges for police and self defence use, the aim being to achieve maximum 'stopping' power while avoiding excessive penetration, which might put innocent third parties at risk. The Hydra Shok design is a Federal development designed to achieve a good balance between expansion and adequate penetration at short range, and features cuts in the bullet jacket, which assist in the controlled expansion of the bullet, and a 'post' swaged within the hollow point. This post helps to prevent the hollow cavity getting plugged with material from the target, which, if it occurs, can adversely affect expansion performance. Some Hydra Shok loads also employ lighter than normal bullets at higher than usual velocity, as is the case here, with a 90 grain rather than 95 grain bullet, again designed to optimise short range performance while avoiding excessive recoil.
