Eley : .500-.450 No. 1 Black Powder Express soft point
Case : head : rimmed, bottlenecked
Originally a true black powder express with a light 270 grain bullet, intended for deer stalking, this 2.75 inch case was also used for target shooting with a heavier 540 grain bullet. It was developed in the 1870s. Although nitro-for-black loads were developed, this cartridge does not seem to have made the transition to full nitro express format, owing to its short cartridge case, limited propellant capacity and the existance of various .450 3.25 and 3.5 inch cases.
