History note
Introduced by Holland & Holland in 1955, and the last of their line of belted magnum cartridges based on the .375 Magnum cartridge case. It was advertised as achieving 3,500 feet per second with a 100 grain bullet, a phenomenal performance with the powders of the day. It was designed for deer stalking and shooting plains game. This cartridge was developed by David Lloyd, the well-know ballistician and rifle designer, who was best known for a telescopic sight mount that would not lose its zero if roughly handled. David Lloyd worked closely with Holland & Holland, the latter supplying him with barrelled actions for his own rifle production.
