Rectangular flag, 36 ½" x 18", made of bunting; features a Union Flag to the upper hoist on a white field. Charged with five seven pointed blue stars forming the Southern Cross and a sixth of four points to represent the Commonwealth of Australia.To the hoist edge is sewn a white canvas heading, 2 ½" wide, that has an 11" long strip of white nylon hoist rope attached to the lower corner. Tied to the hoist rope is a white metal 'figure of eight' ring. 2" from the top of the hoist edge is attached a second similar ring, tied by white tape through two holes that are perforated through the heading. There is a portion of reinforcing wood concealed to upper hoist, where the printed white label is located and the latter ring is tied and attached.

HMAS Newcastle was deployed to the Gulf region in 2002 in support of Operation Slipper, Australia's military contribution to the International Security Assistance Force mission in Afghanistan and the International Coalition against Terrorism misssion across Afghanistan and the Middle East which began in October 2001. During this time the ship contributed to the enforcement of United Nations sanctions against Iraq between February and June.
In August 2003, HMAS Newcastle was again deployed to the Gulf on Operation Catalyst where it monitored sea traffic control operations under the direction of the Task Group Commander. The Operation was the Australian Defence Force's contribution to the US-led multinational force effort to develop a secure and stable environment in Iraq, to assist national recovery programmes and facilitate the transition of Iraq to self-governnance. This ensign was flown from one of the ship's boats during this deployment.
Newcastle served a further rotation to the Gulf on Operation Catalyst in 2005.
HMAS Newcastle is an Australian built 'Adelaide Class' frigate based on the design of the US Navy Oliver Hazard Perry class. A long range escort vessel capable of air defence, submarine warfare, surveillance, reconnaissance and interdiction, it has a crew of 186 and a further 24 helicopter crew.
