A red flag with yellow five-point star at the upper jack end, white jack edge with short yellow ties top and bottom.
Flag acquired by Jennie Barlow from the contents of a pack belonging to a Communist terrorist captured or killed in Jahore Bahru c. 1953.
In 1949 Jennie's father, Jack Barlow BEM, of Scotland Yard applied to join the Colonial Police and went to Malaya as Assistant Superintendant of special branch in the Royal Malayan Police, based in Johore Bahru. Around 1953, at the age of nine years old, Jennie and her mother joined Jack for a couple of years. On a few occasions the contents of packs taken from captured or killed terrorists were laid out and the children of British police officers were allowed to select souvenirs.
Jack Barlow left Malaya in 1956 to become Superintendant in charge of Troodos Division during the struggle against EOKA in the Cyprus Emergency.
