History note
James Carr (8 Feb 1863-Oct 1931) served as Quartermaster with the 7th Casualty Clearing Station in France 1914-15, receiving the Military Cross for service during the battle of Neuve Chappelle 1915 - a very early award, a press obituary in 1931 describing Carr as the first man in the West Riding (of Yorkshire) to be awarded the MC. Later served at the POW hospital at Brocton (Cannock Chase).
Carr's service began in 1877 with the Leeds Rifles, rapidly becoming a serjeant and signalling instructor.
He joined the Leeds Medical Corps on its formation in 1888.
Gazetted as Quartermaster (with honorary rank of Lieutenant) on the outbreak of war.
At his death Carr was President of the Harrogate branch of the Old Contemptible Association.
